Its official name, Nay Pyi Taw, translates as ‘Abode of the King’ and its design shows all the hallmarks of a dictator’s fortified citadel. Since construction began in 2002, already a rumoured $3-4 billion has been pumped into the project; but outside the Ministry Zones, block after block of the downtown districts are still little more than grass.
Yangon (Rangoon) is the economic capital and former administrative capital. The environs of Naypyidaw (Nay Pyi Taw) comprise townships viz: Zeyar Thiri, Pohbba Thiri, Uttara Thiri, Zabu Thiri, Dekina Thiri, Pyinmana, Lewe and Tatkone Townships. Naypyidaw (Nay Pyi Taw) means "Abode of Kings.”
A hydroelectric dam was built to supply electricity for the new capital while ethnic minorities viewed as threat were forced to relocate from the city’s hinterlands. Joshua Hammer wrote in The New Yorker, Naypyidaw “was carved out of the jungle five hours north of Rangoon, along the nation’s only eight-lane expressway.
The new capital of Naypyitaw is near Pyinmana, a trading town on a highway between Yangon and Mandalay. It is situated among remote mountains and dense forests. Yangon by contrast is located on a naviagable river near the sea.
Naypyidaw is, effectively, a new suburb tacked onto the western outskirts of Pyinmana: a historic town with a pre-existing population of 100,000, and which served as the base of the Burma Independence Army during WWII. Subsequently, this region plays an important role in Myanmar’s sense of nationhood.
A Naypyidaw resident waters his lawn. Just a few blocks away from Myanmar’s parliament, a young farmer herds cattle. There is a large army compound on the edge of Naypyidaw, while according to rumours, an underground complex beneath the capital is reserved for high-ranking government officials.
